Western Red Cedar is a softwood that is native to the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia. It is a popular choice for fencing because of its many benefits including:
Durability - it is resistant to decay, insects, and splitting. It's also dimensionally stable, meaning it doesn't warp or shrink.
Appearance - has a rich color variation, from light amber to deep honey brown, and a unique aroma. It also has an intricate grain pattern.
Workability - It's softer texture makes it easy to cut and shape.
Eco-friendly - It's a self sustaining species that regenerates naturally.
Longevity - It can last 20-25 years, which is longer than a spruce fence, which typically lasts 8-10 years.
Cedar is a softwood known for being resistant to rotting so it is a great type of wood to use in wetter regions. Cedar also has natural oils that keep insects away, so it is a durable option for your new fence if you live in an area where termites are a problem. It is also good for homeowners who are on a budget and want a quality wood that will not break the bank. A properly maintained cedar fence can last up to 30 years - so it's no surprise it is one of the most popular types of wood for fencing.
Generally, there are two types of cedar: western red cedar and white cedar. If you are planning to paint your fence and not just stain it, red cedar is probably not the best choice because its striking red coloring is hard to cover. In that case, white cedar is a popular wood for that purpose. Keep in mind that cedar fences do turn gray as the wood ages. And also consider whether you love the scent or hate it because it will be noticeable. Cedar is a mid-range wood in terms of cost
Pressure treated wood is durable and already treated to make it more resistant to rot, insects and other types of decay. It is less stable than types of wood like redwood or cedar, however, it is one of the most affordable types of wood to use in fencing.
Wood that is pressure treated varies in coloring depending on what species and grade of wood it is. Pine is one example of an inexpensive option for pressure treated wood. Along with having the wood pressure treated, you can also choose to have the wood color treated to make it appear more like redwood or cedar. Once you have your fence installed, it is easy to paint or stain.
Pine is a budget-friendly, easy to use type of wood that is great for many types of fences. It is softwood, and makes great vertical boards or picket fences. The downside of it being a softwood is that it can be vulnerable to dents from impacts or warping in high wind areas. While pine is less expensive than other types of wood, it will not last as long. A pine fence can be expected to last between 10 and 15 years.
Visually, pine wood has a yellow or white tone to it. Unlike darker colored woods like red cedar, pine is easy to paint over in just one coat of paint. As far as maintenance, pine is not naturally water resistant like other types of wood including redwood. So treating your pine fence will be important in order to make it more waterproof and rot resistant. Pine is a good choice in areas with a mild climate all year long.
The classic “nail up” wood fence is simple and sturdy. These fences consist primarily of side-by-side boards with minimal gaps, thus reducing the possibility of anyone peeking into your property.
This fence normally consists of non-overlapping, side-by-side boards. Typically, this style will use “dog-ear fence” boards or regular flat top boards. It’s a great way to add privacy to your yard, and this style is often the most economical and comes with either wood posts or metal posts.
The board on board is a popular choice for homeowners seeking a combination of privacy, security, and aesthetic appeal. This type of wood privacy fence is constructed with two overlapping layers of vertical boards attached to horizontal rails, creating a visually pleasing and robust barrier. The boards are typically composed of wood, such as pine or cedar, and feature an alternating pattern with the boards overlapping each other at the edges to form a secure and aesthetically pleasing boundary.
This style ensures that even as your wooden fence planks shrink overtime from weather and outdoor conditions, your privacy won’t be compromised.
A shadowbox fence is an attractive design pattern that creates a visual interest and an attractive interplay between the wood and light. This style uses a staggered arrangement of boards to create a visual barrier that looks the same on both sides. The boards are attached to the fence rails in an alternating pattern, with one board on the front of the rail and the next on the back. The pickets overlap slightly, creating spaces in the fence that resemble boxes.
The shadow box wooden fence is a popular choice in fencing due to its aesthetically pleasing and efficient design. This creates a ‘shadow box’ effect, as the pickets are visible from either side, creating visual interest for observers.
The staggered boards and dual nature of the boards make shadowbox fences more durable than standard privacy fences. The gaps allow air to move through, which helps extend the life of the fence. It offers consistent protection even if the pickets change in size due to moisture. It also looks finished from both sides, so it is considered a "good neighbor" fence.
A good neighbor fence can be just the thing to create a strong foundation of friendship and goodwill. Good neighbor fencing gets its name from the collaborative effort required to build this beautiful, wood fence. A good neighbor fence asks next-door neighbors to work together so both can benefit from this attractive fence style.
The Good Neighbor fence may be the neighborly choice, but it’s also an incredibly durable fence design. With gaps between the boards, air can flow through the fence, giving the boards room to breathe and dry and space for wind gusts to travel through.
With a good neighbor fence, the fence panels alternate on either side of the posts. This creates a uniform, clean look, no matter what side of the fence you’re on.
If you and your neighbor decided to go with a standard wood fence as opposed to a good neighbor fence, one neighbor could have the backside of the fence facing their home – not an ideal situation.

A fence kickboard, also known as a rot board, is a piece of wood that is installed at the bottom of a fence to protect it from the ground and extend it's life:
Protection: a kickboard protects the fence from moisture, rot and decay caused by ground contact. It also keeps small animals from burrowing under the fence.
Appearance: A kickboard can make a fence look more finished.
Weed-eater protection: A kickboard keeps a week-eater from damaging the bottom of the fence.
Sports fencing: A kickboard protects the base of a sports fence from damage caused by balls.
